Head Men's Basketball Coach
Alcorn State University
To manage a competitive Division I Men’s Basketball program that adheres to all University, SWAC, and NCAA rules and regulations while providing a safe and accepting environment for student-athletes to grow and develop academically, athletically and one which encourages personal responsibility, sportsmanship and service to others.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills
- Evaluate basketball talent, scout opponents, assess game performance,
- Develop game strategy, organize and implement practice plans
- Physical Mobility: Reasonable physical fitness level necessary to carry out daily tasks
- Computer skills, knowledge of audio visual equipment, play analysis
- Supervising the men’s basketball team during scheduled away competitions
- Ability to demonstrate basketball skills
- Able to travel and work extended hours
Essential Job Functions
- Coordinate and perform coaching duties including pre-season conditioning, practice, and game preparation, field/floor coaching, and post season activities.
- Operate the program in compliance with University, SWAC, and NCAA rules and regulations.
- Administer a successful student-athlete recruitment program.
- Retain student-athletes in the program, maintaining team continuity, and garnering student-athlete satisfaction with the program.
- Demonstrate concern and support for academic performances of student-athletes on the team.
- Adhere to equipment, facilities, and vehicle request procedures.
- Serve as a public relations lead including attendance at athletic department functions and special events.
- Coordinates the overall practice schedule for the basketball program.
- Manage all operational, fiscal, and administrative activities for the specific sports program.
- Yearly scheduling of games, conditioning, budget preparation, fundraising
- Coaching recruitment of qualified student-athletes with a commitment to academic success
- Other duties as assigned by the Athletics Director
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred. Evidence of successful basketball coaching and recruitment of physically and academically gifted student/athletes at a four year collegiate level is highly preferred. Preferences given for an advanced degree with experience; experience of at least three years coaching basketball in a NCAA Division I or II collegiate setting; comprehensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
