The Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy (http://www.nutrition.tufts.edu) is seeking a dynamic leader to fill the full time, academic position as Director of the Feinstein International Center (FIC). Founded in 1996, the Feinstein International Center is one of the flagship programs of the Friedman School, a unique center of scholarship, research and teaching that plays a leading role in promoting an understanding of humanitarian action among people living in crises-affected and marginalized communities worldwide (http://fic.tufts.edu/). The Center leads innovative research in these areas around the globe. The Center also administers a Master of Arts in Humanitarian Assistance (MAHA) degree that is offered jointly by the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, as well as a specialization for Masters students in the Friedman School’s Food Policy and Applied Nutrition Program (http://fic.tufts.edu/education/for-prospective-students/). The Center also provides technical assistance and training globally.

The successful candidate will have a strong track record of designing, implementing and managing cross-disciplinary research and established scholarship relevant to the work of the Center, be able to oversee grant application and research processes, and actively promote and engage in long-term partnerships with national and international funders, policymakers, and humanitarian and human rights agencies. Candidates should have established scholarship with the focus in humanitarian action in crises-affected and marginalized communities, while also understanding and supporting the diverse related issues in such settings such as food security, nutrition, health, protection, rights, livelihoods, and community resiliency. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in areas including nutrition research, administration of food or nutrition programs in emergencies, and demonstrated cross-cultural experience and management.

Subject to nomination by the Dean and approval of appropriate University officials, the Director would hold the Irwin H. Rosenberg Chair in Nutrition and Human Security. The Center benefits from another named endowment as well as other scholarship and research funds. This is a full-time tenure-track, tenured or contract position to be offered at the rank of Associate, Full Professor or Professor of Practice. The appointment will ideally start as soon as possible.

Principal responsibilities will include:

Providing vision, leadership, and direction to the work of this exciting Center and its diverse professional staff, which includes management of teams and activities around the globe such as current FIC personnel based in Boston, New York City, the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, France, Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda.

Provide leadership for growing and sustaining the FIC portfolio of externally funded research that supports the work of the Center, including strategic fundraising that supports core activities.
Developing and sustaining a strong personal research agenda that supports impactful peer-reviewed publications.
Strengthening and developing strategic external relations with national and international actors and institutions.
Presenting the collective vision and intellectual output of the Center’s researchers to global policy, practice and research constituencies.
Facilitating a process by which the Center can commit to increasing equity in its work and meeting the broader School and University goals of combatting structural racism within and outside Tufts.
Promoting graduate instruction at both Masters and PhD levels, including contributing to teaching and advising.
Strengthening and growing links with other Schools at Tufts.
Overseeing as an academic leader the Center staff, administration, and budgetary activities, in collaboration with the central Friedman School administration.
Preference will be given to candidates with a proven record of grant-funded research. Experience in senior level management of an academic institution, operational agency and/or research teams are strongly desired. A high degree of comfort with media interactions, internal and external interpersonal relations, and advancement activities are critical to the effective leadership of a center of this kind. Experience in teaching is desirable.

The Director will report to the Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, a graduate school founded in 1981 whose academic programs prepare professionals for work in food and nutrition policy and related programs around the globe.

The Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy distinguishes itself by its breadth of scholarship in nutrition research, education, and public impact: from cell to society, food security to healthy aging, individuals to policy, and health to sustainability. We bring together biomedical, interventional, social, behavioral, public health, economics, and food systems scientists to conduct work that improves the nutritional health and well-being of populations throughout the world. The impactful research-to-practice ethos embraced by the Feinstein International Center is mirrored by the research and active outreach pursued by all faculty at the Friedman School.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess a doctoral level degree or other terminal degree in an appropriate discipline or extensive experience of practice.
Candidates should have established scholarship and experience with the focus in humanitarian action in crises-affected and marginalized communities, while also understanding and supporting the diverse related issues in such settings such as nutrition and food security, health, protection, rights, livelihoods, and community resiliency. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated cross-cultural experience and management.  
A record of independent research and publications with external financial support is expected. A candidate’s areas of focus should complement the Friedman School’s existing strengths in research and teaching programs.
