The Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (WKWSCI) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, invites applications for a Research Assistant position to contribute meaningfully to an interdisciplinary project funded by NTU. This project explores how communication influences public understanding and acceptance of novel food technologies in Singapore.

About the Project:

“UNIQUE” (Understanding Diverse Dietary Groups’ Perceptions and AcceptaNce of Novel Foods In Singapore: A QUalitative InvEstigation) investigates how diverse dietary groups in Singapore—such as vegetarians, non-vegetarians, and individuals with or without food allergies—perceive novel foods, including plant-based, cultivated, and genetically modified foods. Using evidence-based, qualitative research methods, the project aims to understand the psychological, sociocultural, and media-related factors shaping these perceptions, as well as to identify and address common misperceptions. Findings will inform public communication strategies and contribute to communicating novel food technologies in Singapore.

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Assistant will support the team in various aspects of the project, including but not limited to:

  • Assist in the design and coordination of focus group discussions and other qualitative data collection activities.

  • Support in recruiting and screening of participants representing diverse dietary groups.

  • Conduct literature reviews and compile relevant academic and media materials on novel foods and food technology communication.

  • Transcribe, organize, and conduct preliminary coding and thematic analysis of qualitative data.

  • Assist in the preparation of research reports, presentations, and publications.

  • Manage administrative tasks related to IRB applications, scheduling, and logistics.

  • Support the development of communication materials (e.g., infographics, social media content) to disseminate research findings.

Job Requirements:

We welcome applications from individuals who are passionate about the intersection of communication, public health, and science. The ideal candidate should possess:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Psychology, Sociology, Social Science, or a related social science or humanities field.

  • Strong interest in topics related to food perception, health communication, or science communication.

  • Prior experience with qualitative research (e.g., focus groups, interviews, thematic analysis) is highly preferred.

  • Familiarity with NVivo or other qualitative analysis tools is an advantage.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team.

  • Responsible, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks.
